Maggie appears in court for a theft

Maggie appears in court for a theft

Published: Friday, 2013/12/20
GENERATIONS actress Maggie Benedict’s
future lies in the hands of the senior
public prosecutor.

The actress who plays Akhona in the SABC1
soapie appeared in the Randburg Magistrates
Court yesterday on a charge of theft after
allegedly shoplifting a packet of Panado
painkillers worth R17,49 at Checkers in Cresta
Shopping Centre, Joburg.
After being arrested on Wednesday, the 32-
year-old actress was released on a warning
from Linden Police Station.

Maggie appeared in court dressed in light-
brown boots, a black skirt, a black jacket and
a doek on her head. She was accompanied by
her lawyer Jonathan Kaiser, who introduced
himself as her brother.

Before being called to the witness box,
Maggie sat in the front row of the public
gallery and listened attentively to the
proceedings.

When the magistrate asked Kaiser whether he
had warned her about the seriousness of the
case and the penalty if she was found guilty,
he said they had not discussed it.
Kaiser said Maggie had no previous
convictions and had never been arrested
before.
He said they would make a representation to
the senior public prosecutor next year.
The
case was postponed to 28 January.
After the case was postponed, Kaiser told
journalists that the case against Maggie was
ridiculous.
“My client will be acquitted before the matter
even goes to trial,” he said.

Nelson Mandela dies

Nelson Mandela dies
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the
father of the nation, has died on
December 5 2013 at the age of 95.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, the
father of the nation, died on
December 5 2013 at the age of 95.
President Jacob Zuma made the
announcement from the Union
Buildings in Pretoria on Thursday
night. He said Mandela passed
away at 20:50 in his Houghton
home surrounded by his
wife, Graça Machel and members
of his family.
Zuma said Mandela would have a
state funeral and that the flags
would fly half-mast from
December 6 until after the
funeral.
Zuma called on South Africans to
"recall the values for which
Madiba fought".
Long illness
Mandela was hospitalised on June
8 with a recurring lung infection.
Initial reports from the
Presidency suggested Mandela
was stable, although his condition
was serious. But on June 23, the
Presidency announced that
Mandela's condition had
deteriorated and he was critical.
Court affidavits soon confirmed
that the former statesman was on
an assisted-breathing, life
support machine. More reports
emerged about Nelson Mandela
in the days that followed, that he
was in a "permanent vegetative
state ", although the presidency
denied these, maintaining that he
was "critical yet stable".
On his 95th birthday, July 18,
President Jacob Zuma announced
an improvement in Mandela's
health. Mandela was discharged
from hospital in September and
transported to his home in
Houghton.  In November, his
family said he remained "quite
ill" , but his pneumo

World Aids Day

World Aids Day

On World AIDS Day: Bigger
problem with AIDS lack of
money, not medicine
This year marked three decades since
doctors in the United States first
began seeing a new, mysterious
disease: AIDS . Since it first appeared,
more than 25 million people
worldwide have lost their lives to
AIDS, according to the World Health
Organization .
Every year since 1987, Dec. 1 is
recognized across the globe as World
AIDS Day, a time to raise awareness of
the deadly disease. For 2011, the
theme surrounding World AIDS Day is
"Getting to Zero." The hope is to have
zero new HIV infections, which cause
AIDS. Zero discrimination and zero
AIDS-related deaths also lead the
cause.
"In this past year, the pre-exposure
prophylaxis protocol was found to be
very effective in keeping high-risk, HIV-
negative people from becoming
infected," explains Craig Wilson, M.D.,
professor in the UAB Department of
Epidemiology and director of the
Sparkman Center for Global Health.
This new approach, Wilson says, can
serve as a means to prevent
transmission, potentially leading to
the goal of zero new HIV infections.
However, there are still challenges
ahead.
"Sustainability on programs around
the world with all of the financial
cutbacks is a huge challenge," Wilson
explains.
"As financial issues mount -
particularly in Europe - we become
more dependent on donations to
fight this disease," adds Wilson.
Prioritization is something Wilson says
will become an issue. The question is
do you spend more money on
prevention, or more on treatment?
Despite the roadblocks, Wilson
believes we've seen the worst of the
havoc this disease can wreak. Moving
forward, he sees the possibility of
even better advances by World AIDS
Day 2012.
"There are a lot of positive things on
the horizon for prevention," Wilson
concludes.
